Overall Purpose of Job

The purpose of the Urology Liaison Registered Nurse is to provide exceptional patient care in an environment where quality, respect, caring and compassion are at the centre of all we do.

The Urology Liaison Registered Nurse, in conjunction with the Consultant Urologist will provide specialty-nursing care and is accountable for the effective delivery of competent, compassionate, and efficient care, engendering the ‘gold standard’ for Urology procedures to both inpatients and outpatients as well as providing telephone follow-up and triage.

This spectrum of care includes clinical, human resources, and financial management.

He/She should be an informed resource in the area of Urology Nursing, carrying a Higher Degree of Nursing Specialty.

He/She should plan an active role in the education and training of patients/family and nursing staff.

Key Responsibilities and Deliverables

·        Provides leadership and direction for the staff in the Urology department, directly and indirectly related to Urology care; while supporting and actualising the goals of the department and service in the Hospital.

 

·        Ensures the effective delivery of competent, compassionate, and efficient care by monitoring and evaluating patient care processes and outcomes in the Urology department

 

·        Manages the staffing, and all the day-to-day operations and budget for the Urology department.

 

·        Participates in continuous quality improvement and risk management programmes at the department level in a collaborative manner with multi-disciplinary colleagues.

 

·        Coordinates urology visits and appointments

 

·        Assists consultants with all procedures performed in the Urology Department

 

·        Undertakes the mentoring and teaching component of Urology Specialty nursing for a variety of staff and medical students, patients and/or family members using didactic and clinical methods.  The teaching may happen as part of a collaborative team approach or on an individual basis.

 

·        When not involved in Urology procedures, participates in inpatient rounds, patient and staff education, follow-up phone calls, appointment arrangement and any other issues directly and indirectly related to the process and management of the Urology Service Line.

 

·        Participates in intra-disciplinary meetings including but not limited to Cancer Multidisciplinary Meetings.

 

·        Participates in consultant led research programmes, data collection and reporting.

 

·        Performs related and other duties as required.

 

·        Familiar with the AORN standards for Peri-operative nursing with regard to sterility, aseptic techniques, and infection control management. Incorporates these practices and guidelines into the daily work patterns.

 

·        Participates in the JCI (Joint Commission International) accreditation.

 

Urology Specific Requirements

·        Provide clinical management and independent care for Urodynamics, Uroflows, reporting results to consultants for interpretation

 

·        Provides clinical management and care for Bladder Instillation with chemotherapy immunisation agents, once training is completed

 

·        Provides clinical care and education for the patient with catheter changes, self catherisation, and trial without catheter.

 

·        Provides patient education both in the clinic and on the telephone to patients and families

 

·        Focus education  to maintain clinical competence in Urology

 

·        Ensure that the education plan for the department is maintained and up to date for all staff who work within Urology

 

·        Participate in Data collection, statistical reporting and outcomes

 

·        Participates in research projects as needed to support the clinical practice and consultants in the department

 

 

Working Environment

·        Conditions such as noise, odours, cramped workspace and/or fumes could sometimes cause discomfort

 

·        Moderate to extreme physical effort may be required such as walking, standing for extended periods in the theatre, and lifting materials, equipment, objects, and/or patients.

 

·        Vision, hearing, talking, and sense of touch abilities must be adequate enough to enable one to quickly and accurately perform tasks such as: reading small print, reading from monitoring equipment, defining details, dexterity related to managing fine suturing materials, and instrumentation.

 

·        Occasional lifting may be heavy and awkward, over 50 lbs

 

·        Frequent periods of concentrated or focused attention will be needed to interpret visual, auditory, and sensory inputs.

 

·        Alertness and careful attention to detail will be required to avoid injury

 

·         May be exposed to such occupational hazards as sharps, communicable diseases, radiation, chemotherapeutic agents, and disoriented or combative patients.

May be required to be on standby and work extended shifts in situations deemed necessary by the ADON, Surgical or another nominated manager

·        The use of personal protective barriers/equipment (PPE) as appropriate;

·        Maintains good working relationships with other departments and with physicians, patients, families and outside agencies.

 

·        Communicates during the shift with the Clinical Coordinator for Urology, Consultants, Anaesthesiologists, GPs; colleagues, students, Clinical Director and Director of Nursing, and any other person as necessary

 

·        Demonstrates the ability to delegate tasks and responsibilities

 

·        Participates in ongoing consultation and collaboration with physicians and other care providers to maximize Urology Department patient outcomes and specific goals.

 

·        Participates in hospital, unit and interdepartmental QI activities

 

·        Demonstrates willingness to assist co-workers whenever needed

 

·        Works in collaboration with Urology Department staff, sharing physician preference, and engendering a collaborative approach to outcome based evidence practices.

 

Other Duties and Responsibilities

·        Attends all required in-services

 

·        All employees are expected to remain flexible to meet the needs of the hospital, which may include floating to other departments/procedural areas to assist as the patient needs fluctuate

 

Person Specification

 

Qualifications

 

 

 

 

 

  • An Bord Altranais Registered General Nurse license in good standing

 

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)

 

  • Post-Graduate Diploma in Urology  Nursing preferable

 

  • Post graduate management qualification desirable

 

 

Experience

  •  Three years of clinical experience in Urology nursing

 

  • Demonstrable Urology clinical expertise
